A WEATHER WALKED IN
Producer
In 1969, Charlie Haughey was discharged from the Army 2nd Battalion 12th Infantry, and headed home from Cu Chi, Vietnam. Charlie took home with him a collection of nearly 2,000 black and white and color negatives from his tour of duty as a rifleman. Upon returning home and finding the climate hostile toward military service veterans, he put his negatives in a box next to his uniform in the back of a closet, and there they sat for nearly 50 years.
In 2012, I met Charlie by chance at ADX Portland, a shared coworking space where he was working on carpentry projects in his retirement. We became fast friends, talking about photography over beers, and I learned of his photo collection.
I produced multiple gallery showings of his work, a print book and iOS book with audio commentary, his photos were featured in press from The Boston Globe and The Atlantic, and Ken Burns used Charlie’s imagery in his 10-part documentary series The Vietnam War, premiering in 2017.
